Job Description

We are currently recruiting for an Assistant Manager to join a VAT group in Edinburgh as part of the growth of VAT as a service line across their Scottish and Northern Region offices. The role is for an individual to work across both groups advising on client matters in their difference practice groups. The successful candidate will work with the VAT director in the Edinburgh office who is responsible for all Scottish offices. The VAT practice in Edinburgh also advises a number of listed businesses and larger corporate groups.

Responsibilities

The role will provide an opportunity for the individual to work across a wide range of corporate clients and individuals, charities and not for profit organisations, advising on many different aspects of VAT compliance, transaction and liability matters. Advice is provided through face-to-face meetings and via written correspondence to clients and the successful candidate will also be expected to act as a technical resource for internal partners and staff on a variety of different VAT issues. This will be a challenging and interesting role dealing with internal and external clients directly on a day to day basis.

Particular experience of land and property transactions, house building and partial exemption would be desirable. They will also be pro-active in their approach to problem solving and technical research. Strong report writing skills are essential together with computer skills, particularly Excel. An awareness of how clients compile VAT returns using ERP or accounting packages, and how to advise clients on managing risk would be beneficial. The team has a wide and varied mix of clients which means that the successful candidate will be constantly exposed to different clients and a range of different technical problems. An ability to take responsibility for and be comfortable with complex matters in a timely manner is very important, together with strong personal organisation and time management skills. The role will be based in Edinburgh. Travel will be required to the other Northern regional office and also occasional trips to London. A clean driving licence and access to a car to be used for business purposes would be advantageous, together with the flexibility to travel to visit clients across the UK, as necessary. During the interview process candidates will be asked to undertake a short written test. The topics will be agreed in advance with the candidate.

Candidates will ideally be CTA qualified or be studying towards the final stages of the qualification. In addition the candidate must have strong interpersonal skills and be confident in dealing with partners and clients, with the ability to work under pressure in a friendly environment.
