Job Description

I have a fantastic opportunity with NHS Digital for a Data Scientist. This role is a temporary assignment till June 2019 with view to being extended thereafter.

Description:

As a member of the NHS Digital Data Science Team you will have responsibility for developing and applying new and innovative ways of managing and analysing data.
You will:
" Be a member of the Data Science Team, reporting to the Senior Data Scientists.
" Handle and analyse large health and social care datasets using tools such as SQL, R and Python.
" Proactively build effective working relationships across NHS Digital with data experts in other teams as well as external customers and suppliers to ensure business deliverables are met and delivered.
" Work with other Data Scientists and BI colleagues to develop baseline analytics on health and social care data on a national scale.
" Where applicable, apply knowledge of Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Cognitive Analytics and Big Data.

" Ability to communicate effectively to non-technical contacts in both written and verbal form
" Ability to understand and interpret results, applying the results to the given problem and suggesting conclusions to be drawn.
" Able to develop solutions and processes for data science and data management.
" Ability to deliver high quality work under pressure and tight deadlines.
" Understanding of data quality issues and appropriate data validation techniques.
" Ability to work effectively on your own or as part of a team and contribute innovative ideas and knowledge to your colleagues.
" Ability to identify innovative uses of data.

Key tasks and deliverables:
You will work alongside highly skilled colleagues who possess higher degrees in data science topics and who work alongside experts in the fields of data analysis and IT development.
For each piece of work you will go through the following CRISP-DM process:
" Business understanding, Data understanding, Data Preparation, Modelling, Evaluation, Deployment.
Specific pieces of work that are currently in progress include:
o Feature engineering
o Identifying factors associated with emergency care demand
o Trialling different matching algorithms to be implemented in the central NHS record index
o Building predictive and prescriptive models using different mental health datasets
o Analysing free text fields from primary care sources in order to derive meaning and allow categorisation
o Developing a natural language processing tool that offers individuals the opportunity to explore structured data without needing to understand the structure
o The exact work that you will be doing will depend on your skill set. We also endeavour to allow our data scientists the time to innovate and suggest areas for further development.
