Job Description

We are looking for Qualified Solicitors/Barristers/Chartered Legal Executives and Law Graduates who can make effective decisions and deliver at pace (including those graduating this year). Graduates in other disciplines who have successfully completed a Graduate Diploma in Law (or equivalent and candidates with Immigration casework experience also eligible to apply.

Litigation Operations is an exciting, challenging and rewarding place to work. We are responsible for considering pre-action protocol letters, judicial review challenges and private law claims. Often the legal challenges we manage are complex, novel and politically sensitive and our handling is often in the public eye. This means you will often be working on cases which change and shape the development of the law, particularly human rights law. You can expect some of your cases will have Ministerial interest and many may be featured in the national press.

You will, predominantly, work on judicial review challenges in the Upper Tribunal (Immigration and Asylum Chamber) but may also be involved in cases progressing to the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court. Initially, you will develop expertise in a particular area - perhaps around human rights or asylum - and, as you gain experience, there will be opportunities for you to take on a wider range of areas. With the support of colleagues, you will become skilled at spotting which decisions should be defended and which may need to be reconsidered.

You will consider pre-action protocol correspondence as it arrives and be responsible for drafting clear responses setting out the Home Office position to the challenges, seeking input from operational decision makers as needed. If challenges proceed to judicial review, you will continue to work alongside operational decision makers, policy colleagues and other professionals to provide clear instructions to Government Legal Department lawyers (the lawyers instructed to represent the Home Office in court). Ultimately, you will be responsible for the management of the judicial review from the start to the end so will gain experience in litigation handling, preparing cases for court and managing cost conclusions.

Responsibilities

We are looking for candidates who can demonstrate that they hold some essential skills. We look for people who:

Are well organised and accurate in their work:

o Are organised, who plan and are well prepared, who also seek to maximise time and productivity.

o Are precise, detailed focused and ensure everything is accurate and error free.

o Are able to think ahead and avoid problems before they occur.

o Are able to use their judgement and take considered approach to situations and tasks when making decisions.

Work collaboratively:

o Are able to establish mutual respect and trust building relationships with others internally and externally.

o Are highly motivated and inspire others to move things along to achieve target goals.

Take responsibility:

o Are resilient individuals who have inner composure to recover quickly from setbacks and learn from them.

o Are responsible to take ownership for own decisions and be accountable for what has been delivered.

This is a temporary role for 6 months initially paying £14.84 per hour. 37 hours per week. To begin with you will be working from home, and then it will be a hybrid role working from home and in the office, which is based in Feltham. You will be required to attend training in the office in Feltham.

Appointment will be subject to a successful Counter Terrorist Check vetting (CTC). You will need to have a valid passport, 2 x proofs of address, proof of NI, and ideally have been living in the UK for the last 5 years.
