Job Description

Have you ever wanted to work within the public sector? Are you a law graduate who is looking to establish their career within the legal industry? Then please read on as we are looking for a Legal Researcher to join our client the College of Policing!

These roles can be based in the office at Harrogate or the client is open to full time working from home

  • Client: College of Policing
  • Hours: Monday - Friday 37 hours a week (hours are flexible around 9-5)
  • Location: Harrogate or working from home
  • Contract length: Temporary until September 2023. Chance of extension subject to business requirements
  • Pay: £12.67 per hour (annually £24,377)

Our client the College of Policing is looking to speak with graduates or those with a legal background regarding a Legal Research role. You must have completed and received a law degree (BA hons, LPC etc) in order to be considered for these roles or have legal office experience.

The Client

The College of Policing was established in 2012 as the professional body for everyone who works for the police service in England and Wales.

The Role

You will undertake and deliver timely legal research and validation of College policing standards, publications, products and services to provide an efficient legal resource underpinning professional practice in policing

Responsibilities

  • Conduct timely and appropriate research to scan for new legislation, case law, precedents and policy changes which may impact on professional policing standards, guidance and other College products.
  • Acknowledge and respond to queries on legal matters originating from within the College, police forces and the public where the topic is information law-related. Conducting research and providing informed interpretation based on case law and precedents, to facilitate consistent application of legal powers across policing in accordance with policing standards and guidance.
  • Work with Marketing and Communications and faculty colleagues to produce for publication, frequent responses to legal interpretation queries and other items of interest.
  • Research, author, prepare, commission and edit articles and regularly publish the College Brief providing a concise, reader-centred summary of legal developments and criminal justice news.
  • Draft and prepare reports, deliver presentations and maintain online and intranet content to provide guidance, information and support to internal and external stakeholders on legal and diversity issues.
  • Research, draft, develop and regularly review evidence-based policies, processes, procedures and "how to" guides on legal, equality, diversity and human rights matters for the College ensuring publications are contemporary, relevant and fit for purpose to enable line managers and employees to access and apply consistent approaches to prevailing best practice, in accordance with Data Protection and Freedom of Information requirements.
  • Provide prompt, professional, customer-focused and accurate legal and diversity-related guidance to support the correct and consistent application of College policies and procedures in compliance with statutory requirements, identifying and taking action to address shortfalls and escalating concerns where appropriate.
  • Research and prepare responses to legal requests for information under the Freedom of Information Act to ensure consistent compliance with College customer service standards and legislative requirements.

What skills and experience we require from you to be considered:

  • A Law Degree or equivalent Level 6 legal qualification
  • Evidence of commitment to continuing professional development
  • Experience of developing strong working relationships with internal and external customers and removing unnecessary barriers to service delivery
  • Excellent research skills with ability to summarise accurately and write in a clear, concise and engaging way for a mixed audience, picking out key points from detailed information on complex issues
  • Thorough, up-to-date understanding of legal aspects of diversity and human rights issues
  • Ability to work independently, accurately and quickly, with strict attention to detail and within tight deadlines and under pressure
  • Self-motivated and pro-active team player
  • Proficient in MS Office suite including PowerPoint
  • Experience in a legal, policing and/or criminal justice work environment

A CTC clearance check will be required for these positions.
