Job Description
Paralegal
Monday to Friday 9-5
£14.01 an hour
1 year temporary assignment with possible extension
This is a paralegal role in which there will be a significant element of legal casework and candidates will need relevant experience of working in the legal sector and be able to demonstrate legal analysis and the ability to manage a busy caseload and cope with competing priorities.. This post would be ideal for those wishing to gain experience in a busy, high profile litigation practice and who are intending to pursue a career as a solicitor or barrister in the long term.
Key Tasks:
The successful candidate will be expected to run a caseload of civil penalty appeals acting on behalf of the Government office.
These are appeals from penalties imposed on hauliers and employers who have been found to have illegal immigrants in their vehicles or found employing those who cannot lawfully work in the UK.
Appeals against such penalties take place in the County Court and the case holder will take primary responsibility for the preparation of the case including liaison with the client, counsel, court and opponents; the preparation, collation and service and filing of the witness evidence relied on by the client and instruction of counsel.
The candidate would be expected to carry out straightforward litigation tasks (for example, preparing instructions to counsel, reviewing documents, legal research, liaising with clients, attending hearings and conferences with counsel) with little supervision.
Also to carry out routine administrative tasks with minimal supervision (copying documents, preparing hearing bundles, dealing with financial matters, arranging appointments with medical experts, liaising with counsel's clerks in relation to hearings and conferences, routine letters to the court, etc.).
Ideal experience required to be successful:
Have worked in a law firm or in-house legal department (public or private sector), or gained other legal experience, preferably using a case practice/management system.
