Job Description

THE ROLE

An exciting opportunity has arisen within our client's Hampstead Hospice for a Ward Manager to cover maternity leave. In this managerial role you will be responsible for the overall efficiency and effective management of the IPU team of registered nurses, health care assistants and Nurse Associates to ensure their service is able to meet the needs of their patients and families requiring specialist palliative care.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES

  • Work closely with the Education Team, promote an environment conducive to the development needs of all staff, including volunteers, and participate in the teaching of all staff including clinical staff, student nurses, visiting students and volunteers
  • Develop and participate in induction programmes for all new staff
  • Provides highly effective communication with patients, families/carers
  • Develops and maintains effective systems of communication between members of the nursing team, spanning both day and night duty and all wards
  • Ensures effective communication and liaison with members of the multi-disciplinary team, support departments within the hospice, community and hospital teams and other primary care services
  • Maintains accurate patient records ensuring all relevant information and outcomes are clear
  • Assists with leading the volunteers within the In-Patient areas, ensuring appropriate support and guidance
  • Manages complaints, compliments, and incidents, obtaining and sharing patient and carer feedback
  • Provide and receive complex and sensitive information and ensure effective communication both internally to the hospice and with external organisations
  • To foster a sensitive and caring atmosphere for patients, carers and staff leading the inpatient nursing teams by example and professionalism
  • Promote good public relations with professional and non-professional visitors to the Hospice
  • Plan the work of the team by undertaking responsibility for the off-duty rota and holiday planning for the inpatient unit to always ensure adequate staffing and skill mix
  • Manage ward stocks within identified resources and contribute to budget planning for the inpatient unit
  • Participate in Marie Curie's Personal Performance Review and Development programme by undertaking PPRDs and assisting staff to formulate Personal Development Plans
  • Take an active role in the hospice's clinical governance by contributing to policy and practice changes arising from, audits, complaints etc.
  • Take an active role in quality assurance initiatives including the setting and auditing of standards and implementing resulting action plans
  • Participate in research projects and promote the use of evidence-based practice
  • In conjunction with the Hospice Manager, be responsible for the recruitment and selection of staff for the inpatient team
  • Be responsible for infection control within the hospice
  • Cover in the absence of the community team Leader and to manage the hospice site at agreed times
  • Participate in the "on Call" rota for the Hospice
  • Attend all mandatory courses and training
  • Participate in annual performance review with the Hospice Manager to discuss own professional and managerial development and agree objectives in line with the hospice's own business plan

PERSON SPECIFICATION

  • Experience of formal and informal teaching
  • Evidence of research-based practice
  • Ability to contribute as part of a team to a dynamic environment
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal

  • Ability to manage time, self and own workload and prioritise affectively

  • RGN or RN Adult
  • Degree in a health-related subject or willingness to undertake one
  • Teaching and assessing qualification
  • Diploma or degree in Palliative Care or Cancer Care
  • Management qualification
  • Two years in Specialist Palliative Care
  • Staff Management

  • Computer literate

SALARY AND WORKING HOURS

  • Monday - Friday, 07.30am - 3.30pm (there may be some flexibility around this)
  • £40,057 - £45,839 depending on experience
  • 5 hours per week
  • FTC Maternity cover for 1 year
