Hours: General office hours with some flexibility
Location: Bishopsgate House, Feethams, Darlington, Durham, DL1 5QE

About the Role
Brook Street, on behalf of the Department for Education, is seeking an experienced Assistant Financial Manager to join the team on a temporary basis. The successful candidate will provide mid‑level managerial support, working with minimal supervision and using sound judgement to deliver high‑quality outcomes.

This role requires strong organisational capability, excellent communication skills, and the ability to interpret and report on complex financial data. You will be responsible for supporting financial processes, managing stakeholder relationships, and contributing to continuous improvement initiatives.

Key Responsibilities
The role includes, but is not limited to:

  • Preparing high‑level correspondence and quality‑assuring documents drafted by others
  • Interpreting, analysing, and reporting complex data
  • Managing the workload of a team or section
  • Responding to complex enquiries and resolving problems
  • Liaising with senior internal and external stakeholders, building and maintaining effective working relationships

Technical Advisor Financial Process Responsibilities:

  • Managing applications for payment form processing
  • Processing Purchase Order uplifts
  • Completing data entry for the Financial Assurance Tracker
  • Agreeing additional fees in line with provided criteria
  • Contributing to continuous improvement to enhance process quality
  • Working closely with approvers and Technical Advisor firms to ensure accuracy of information

Administrative and Organisational Support:

  • Drafting communications and maintaining audit‑ready trackers
  • Organising Technical Advisor meetings, including booking facilities and coordinating attendees
  • Acting as secretariat for governance meetings when required, including agenda and action management
  • Supporting planning and delivery of training sessions, including preparing materials
  • Contributing to performance, technical, and continuous improvement meetings
  • Supporting compliance with Technical Advisor Agreement contract requirements and escalating issues where necessary
  • Providing general organisational support to ensure programme activity remains structured and effective

Qualifications and Experience Required

  • Five GCSEs at grade C or above
  • Two A‑level passes at grade E or above, or equivalent
  • NVQ Level 3 or 4 in Management (or relevant management experience)
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Proven management experience within an office environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
