Job Title: Court Usher
Brook Street is recruiting a Court Usher for an exciting opportunity within the public sector, supporting the vital work of HM Courts & Tribunals Service.
Location: Manchester
Hours: Full-time, Monday to Friday, 37 hours per week
Contract: Temporary assignment until March 2026 (extension highly likely but not guaranteed)
Pay Rate: £12.21 per hour
Security Clearance: Enhanced DBS required
About the Role
As a Court Usher, you will play a key role in ensuring the smooth and efficient running of court proceedings. You will act as the first point of contact for court users, provide essential support to the judiciary and administrative teams, and help maintain a professional, safe and organised court environment.
This is a public-facing role requiring professionalism, resilience, and sensitivity when dealing with vulnerable individuals and potentially distressing situations. While tasks are governed by established procedures, you will need to react quickly and appropriately to changing circumstances.
Key Responsibilities
Court & Hearing Support
Prepare court and hearing rooms and clear them down at the end of the day
Call parties into court in priority order and escort court users as required
Support vulnerable adults and children attending hearings
Keep parties informed of changes to hearing times or courtrooms
Liaise with Court Clerks, Legal Advisers, the Judiciary, Witness Service and external agencies
Administrative Duties
Assist court clerks by producing accurate court logs and reports
Collect and deliver files, bundles and documentation to judiciary and staff
Complete standard forms, acknowledgements, court orders and warrants
Maintain and update databases and electronic records
Operate court and office equipment, including recording equipment
Carry out general clerical duties, including data entry and switchboard use
Post, Stock and Records
Open, sort, distribute and dispatch post
Monitor and replenish stationery and court supplies
Handle straightforward financial tasks under instruction (e.g. jury payments, petty cash)
Communication & Reception
Answer face-to-face and telephone enquiries
Provide accurate information related to court proceedings
Swear oaths and assist with the formalities of hearings
Flexibility
Work flexibly across different court locations or HMCTS offices when required
Undertake other duties appropriate to the role as requested by management
Skills and Experience Required
2 GCSEs at grade C/4 or above (or equivalent), or relevant experience in a busy public service environment
Strong IT and data entry skills
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to remain calm and professional in challenging or sensitive situations
Good organisational skills with the ability to prioritise tasks effectively
Resilience and discretion when handling confidential or distressing information
A transferable DBS registered on the update service is highly desirable.
