About the Role
As an Administrative Officer (AO), you will work within a supportive team environment, handling a wide range of administrative functions that help progress cases through the court and tribunal system. You may have regular contact with court users, legal professionals, and the judiciary.
You will be based at a specific office but may occasionally be required to support nearby HMCTS locations. While roles vary, you will undertake a selection of the responsibilities below.
Key Responsibilities
General Administration
Prepare papers and files for courts, tribunals, hearings, and meetings
Produce official court/tribunal documents
Photocopying, filing, post handling
Update in-house systems, data input, and record maintenance
Book and prepare meeting rooms; support training sessions
Prepare agendas, instructions, handouts, and related materials
Drafting
Produce standard letters, minutes, notes, reports, and submissions in line with HMCTS guidelines
Operational Support
Clerk civil and family courts or tribunal hearings
Assist court users; support rota and listing activities
Contact relevant parties, schedule hearings, serve documents
Process warrants, collect fines/fees (including chip & pin)
Handle face-to-face, written, and telephone enquiries
Contribute to daily TIB (Team Information Board) meetings
Support continuous improvement and small project work
Undertake ad hoc roles (e.g., Jury Bailiff Officer, H&S support, L&D coordinator)
Casework Processing
Handle documents including court orders, claims, fines, fees, and legal aid
Ensure accurate court resulting and file interpretation
Work to throughput and accuracy targets
Checking & Verification
Check documents, records, accounts, and returns
Validate colleagues' work where required
Ensure compliance with quality standards
Information Management
Compile information for reports, accounts, warrants, statistical returns
Prepare bundles and interpret source materials
Support daily TIB meetings with accurate, timely information
Calculations & Finance
Produce basic statistical analysis
Update records, reconcile accounts, prepare invoices
Handle small financial transactions
Calculate and manage anticipated juror numbers efficiently
Customer & Stakeholder Communication
Provide professional, clear, and helpful service to the public, judiciary, legal professionals, and partner agencies
Offer guidance on processes, forms, and court procedures
Support delivery of a "right first time", polite and prompt service
Operational Delivery Profession
This role is part of the government's Operational Delivery Profession, offering development, training, and a wider cross-government community. Roles include face-to-face services, processing, and contact centre support across the UK.
