Court Usher - Public Sector (Legal)
Location: North Tyneside Magistrates' Court / Newcastle / Gateshead (fully on-site)
Pay: £12.21 per hour
Hours: 37 hours per week, Monday-Friday
Contract: Initial 3-month assignment with strong possibility of extension
Security Clearance: Enhanced DBS required

Brook Street is currently recruiting for a Court Usher to support a large public sector organisation within the legal and justice system. This is an excellent opportunity for someone organised, confident and professional to play a key role in ensuring the smooth day-to-day running of court hearings.

Location & Working Pattern

This is a fully on-site role working across multiple courts in the North East:

  • Monday-Wednesday: Newcastle or Gateshead (location may vary)

  • Thursday-Friday: North Tyneside Magistrates' Court

Flexibility to work at nearby court sites may occasionally be required.

Role Overview

As a Court Usher, you will provide essential support to court staff, the judiciary, legal professionals and members of the public. You will help ensure court proceedings run efficiently while maintaining a professional, respectful environment for all attendees.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supporting court proceedings by providing ushering and administrative assistance

  • Preparing courtrooms and ensuring all parties are present for hearings

  • Escorting and supporting vulnerable individuals, including children and vulnerable adults, to the appropriate courtrooms

  • Maintaining accurate court logs and records

  • Updating internal systems and databases

  • Liaising with Legal Advisors, Judiciary, legal professionals and members of the public

  • Acting on the outcomes of hearings and completing required follow-up tasks

  • Providing general administrative support to the court team

About You

To succeed in this role, you will be calm under pressure, highly organised and comfortable interacting with a wide range of people.

Essential skills and experience:

  • Strong IT and data entry skills

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to remain professional when exposed to sensitive or distressing information

  • Confident managing challenging or difficult situations

  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise tasks and work independently

Desirable:

  • A transferable Enhanced DBS registered on the update service
