Executive Officer - Marine Protected Area (MPA) Enforcement Officer
Location: Tyneside House, Skinnerburn Rd, Newcastle upon Tyne NE4 7AR
Hours: 37 hours per week (9am-5pm, some flexibility)
Working pattern: Hybrid - 2 days in the office, 3 days from home
Start date: ASAP
Assignment end date: 31/03/26 - Possibility to extend
Pay rate: £15 per hour - Paid weekly
About this role:
This role is an important role within MMO and the post holder will be responsible for contributing towards some of the fastest moving and highest profile areas of MMO work. This role requires the post holder to have both technical and IT skills together with an understanding of conservation and control and enforcement issues. Due to the fast pace of the Marine Protected Area (MPA) and Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) work areas, good communication skills will be critical to ensure that issues are promptly detected and escalated
Responsibilities
- Remote monitoring of activities within MPAs
- Daily monitoring and triage of VMS alarms from MPAs
- Issuing of advice and warning letters to vessels detected within closed areas
- Generation of intel on spatial offences and vessel movements
- Prepare and present findings regularly to senior colleagues to facilitate decision making
- Compile Investigation case files as required
- Supporting other work within the Offshore Operations team
- Monitoring of electronic logbooks of vessels in English waters to detect offences and generate intelligence
Essential
- Good IT skills and ability to quickly learn and operate IT systems effectively
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to manage own time, prioritise tasks, and work independently with minimal supervision
- Diligent and reliable work ethic with excellent attention to detail and process adherence
- Analytic ability to identify patterns of movement and determine fishing activity
- Strong record-keeping and data management skills
Desirable
- Good knowledge of UK and EU fisheries legislation
- Good knowledge of UK fisheries and fishing vessel operation
- An understanding of the systems used in remote monitoring of fishing activity including VMS, I-VMS and AIS
